1-20-12...

From Sharon Page,  Hi everyone, We are finally seeing some light at the end.  Great news to tell is that Mike is now wt. bearing on both legs as tolerated.   The fractures have healed according to ortho.  He is bearing full wt on the right and limited on the left just because of the open area at the left ankle where the Achilles is exposed.  We are still doing daily dressing changes to that area with hopes per the Plastics Dr. that it will fill in on its own.  As time goes on he may need tendon surgery depending on his function in the left foot.  It is still painful on the left but we are making great progress with him using the walker.  He can even get in and out of his lazy boy recliner which was a big goal for him.  Mike says that when he walks he feels like he's walking on the moon with two so called black moon  boots.  While Mike is receiving home therapy and home nursing visits he is pretty much home bound per insurance.  That is the hard part for him.  Since the weather has been cooperating we try to get him outside on the ramp when possible.  Yesterday he walked down the ramp and to the car to do a car transfer.  He did great.  Sitting in the front seat of the car makes him feel like a real human being again.  Oh the little things in life that we take for granted!!  We go back on Feb. 3 to see ortho and plastics so we will take it from there.  Hopefully Mike will progress to outpatient pt where more equipment is available such as parallel bars.  The hard part for me is not being able to get to Pa. to see my daughter and grandchildren.  They did come down shortly after Christmas for a short visit so that was nice.  The good part is the wonderful progress he is seeing.  Again much thanks to all for all the support and warm wishes for a speedy recovery.    Love, Sharon

1-29-12
1-29-12  The great news is that DJ Mills is doing much better and is on the road to recovery. He is out of the Coronary Care Unit and in a regular hospital room. He's in room 4F-27. Visitors are welcome, please come by and say hello. A big thanks for all the prayers and support. In good times, it's easy to say things like, "we are one big family", but in times of need like this, when people go the extra mile to show their love and support, it just goes to prove that we are indeed a big family. We are still working trades, doing watches, and providing meals. If you can help, contact E16/T3 and they will put you in touch with who you need to talk too. The members of the Midnight Express want to thank the members of DCFD for the outpouring of support.

A Special VIP Visits Squad 1 and Engine 2

April 30, 2011: Story & Photos By: Elliot J. Goodman

Members of Rescue Squad 1 and Engine 2 were honored by the visit of a real living legend when retired Deputy Fire Chief Harry Gates visited their quarters and had lunch.

Chief Gates spent some of his very best years at the squad, during his visit he told many great stories of the "Good Old Days". He served the DCFD from his probation year in 1950 at Engine 25 and retired as Deputy Fire Chief in 1979.

Chief Gates toured the station with Captain Ed Smith and other members, as well as another VIP in attendance, Kenny Cox. In his tour he even climbed up into the rear of the squad and that brought back memories of the old "McCaa" mask that used to be in the back.

A great job by the members of the R1 and E2 for hosting the event and to Local 36 Vice President Dabney Hudson for bringing him downtown.
